The Ford Mustang was officially unveiled on April 17, 1964 at the Worlds Fair in Flushing Meadows, New York. That same day, Mustangs were also introduced at Ford dealers nationwide and over 20000 sold almost immediately.

The Mustang was named after the the WWII fighter plane and Ford sold hundreds of thousands the first year, far beyond their expectations. The media picked up on this new model and the Mustang became a magazine sensation. The mustang was featured in a few James Bond movies, but “Goldfinger was the first, then Steve McQueen made it famous in “Bullitt” and who can forget Elanor and “Gone in 60’s Seconds”.

It didn’t take long until the 1 millionth Mustang rolled off the line in 1966 and when Ford celebrated their 300 millionth car, it was a 4oth anniversary 2004 Mustang GT convertible that wore the badge.

To date, there have been over 9 million Mustangs sold. What would Henry Ford think?
