Packard and Corvette Pairings Add American Flair to Gooding & Company’s Amelia Island Auction

Santa Monica, Calif. (January 20, 2022) — Internationally revered auction house Gooding & Company is gearing up for its 12th annual Amelia Island Auction with two distinct pairs of American classics. These significant pairings, both offered from long-term ownership, will join the company’s roster of consignments on the live auction stage on Friday, March, 4, 2022 at 11:00 am EST in Amelia Island ahead of the weekend’s Concours d’Elegance. All lots presented at the auction will also be available through online bidding on the company’s website.

“We have the unique honor of representing two V-windshield Dietrich-bodied Packards that were among the rarest and most envied of their day, and are seldom offered for sale,” said Gooding & Company Specialist, Garth Hammers. “Along with our two highly original, low-mileage Corvettes, our upcoming auction will present collectors with a variety of options from different eras in American automotive excellence.

Pair of Packard Model 904 Deluxe Eight Individual Customs
The auction house is presenting a 1932 Packard Model 904 Deluxe Eight Individual Custom Stationary Coupe (Estimate: $1,800,000 – $2,400,000) along with a 1932 Packard Model 904 Deluxe Eight Individual Custom Victoria (Estimate: $1,000,000 – $1,300,000). The pair are revered for their unmistakably striking Dietrich designs and are accented with the sporting, open fenders of Packard’s Ninth Series. The Individual Custom Stationary Coupe is one of just two known to exist; both are built on the Deluxe Eight chassis, and no Twin Six versions are known to have been built. With its steeply raked, dual-pane windshield, the Stationary Coupe stands as one of the most compelling designs of the Classic Era. Amazingly, the example offered here has been held in single ownership since 1968.

The Individual Custom Convertible Victoria is another of the most popular Dietrich designs of the period. Strikingly presented in red with a tan leather interior, this Victoria was awarded First in Class at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance^® in 1982, and has continued to be selectively exhibited, with top results, as recently as 2018, when it won a First Premier badge at a CCCA Grand Classic. The Victoria has noted provenance, having been owned in the early 1950s by legendary automotive artist and author of the famous volume Twenty Silver Ghosts, Melbourne Brindle. One of only four of its kind known to exist, this extremely significant Packard has been owned by enthusiasts for the past 70 years. It makes for a significant event any time a Dietrich-bodied V-windshield Packard is offered for sale publicly, but when two respected, award-winning examples simultaneously come to auction, it is noteworthy.

Pair of Chevrolet Corvette Coupes
The company is also presenting a 1963 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Split-Window Coupe (Estimate: $750,000 – $900,000), as well as a 1966 Chevrolet Corvette 427/390 Coupe (Estimate: $250,000 – $350,000). The Split-Window Corvette offered here is possibly the finest Z06 extant, with a known history of only three owners and less than 5,400 miles on the odometer. This example presents in exceptionally original, unrestored condition, and is the sole 1963 Z06 finished in Sebring Silver over Saddle Tan leather. Its documentation includes an original dealer invoice and more. It was featured in the Bloomington Gold Special Collection XXV: The Grand Finale in 2009, and was inducted into The Great Hall in 2010. Coming to auction after 45 years in single family ownership, this Z06 is an absolute must for any serious Corvette collector.

The 1966 Corvette 427/390 Coupe is an exceptional, unrestored survivor that has remained in single family ownership from new for over 55 years. This big-block coupe is finished in rare Tuxedo Black with black leather upholstery, and is equipped with a long list of desirable options. In 1977, the impeccably preserved, low-mileage Coupe was exhibited at the annual Bloomington Corvette Corral, where it received a Second Place trophy as the runner up to a freshly painted show car. The outcome sparked a debate among the Corvette community, ultimately leading to the creation of Bloomington Gold Certification in 1978. Since then, highly original, unrestored Corvettes such as this 427/390 Coupe have been recognized for their special qualities, inspiring new judging categories like ‘Survivor’ and ‘BENCHMARK.’ Since being exhibited in 1977, this Tuxedo Black ’66 Corvette has been well maintained, accumulating a total of just 10,672 miles per the odometer reading at the time of cataloguing. This magnificent Corvette is sure to attract any collector with a passion for unrestored, preservation-quality cars.
