The 1901 Bugatti Type 2

In 1901 Bugatti exhibited the first of his own cars at an international exhibition in Milan. He had built the car – The Type 2 – with the help of the Gulinelli brothers, and it won an award from the French Automobile Club. However, this project fell through when one of the Gulinelli brothers died.

In the end, the license to produce the car was sold to the company De Dietrich in Niederbronn, Alsace. Since Ettore was not yet 21 years old, the contract had to be concluded between De Dietrich and Ettore’s farther.
